Patti Stanger may have finally met her match in 39-year-old banker turned clothing designer Doug Donahoo, who she tried to pair off with the perfect man in tonight's episode of The Millionaire Matchmaker.
After enjoying a successful career in private banking, Donahoo decided his passion was with environmental awareness. So he founded 4-rth (For Earth), a line of eco-friendly sustainable clothing made from fabrics including bamboo and organic cotton. He's even determined that his estate be left to the Natural Resources Defense Council, an organization that lobbies Congress and promotes conservation of the environment, working against urban sprawl, pollution, and habitat destruction.
In line with his passion for the environment, Tuesday night's episode of The Millionaire Matchmaker is all green.
Donahoo took time to talk to The Advocate about living an eco-friendly life, what Stanger is really like, and what he is looking for in a man.
The Advocate: The episode you appear in has a very special theme. Can you tell our readers a little more about it?
Doug Donahoo:
Our episode is being cast as the eco-friendly episode because the other millionaire has an eco-friendly business. Our hour is focused around eco-sensitive themes. The other millionaire took her date on a toxic dump tour in Long Beach. It was not very romantic, but the emphasis of the show was to bring environmental awareness to her viewing audience because I don't think it has ever been discussed on her show.
How are you doing your part to preserve the environment?
I drive a hybrid vehicle, I'm very sensitive about how much I use, I'm very sensitive about recycling, and I'm very proactive in terms of teaching my friends how to be more conscious of the environment. I lecture them if we're out and I see them do something that's not eco-sensitive.
Does your ideal match have to be eco-sensitive as well?
I think everyone should be more conscious of how they're impacting the planet. If they're not, they need to be open to the idea. They can't be somebody who does not care. How can they not care?
The Millionaire Matchmaker is known for showing the tiffs
Patti gets into with her clients. Did you have any run-ins with her?
When
she first arrived the photo shoot we were putting together she was very
cranky and was going off on some of the crew in the hallway. She was in
a really foul mood. After that, she just came in and she was nice to
everyone and she just jumped into the interview with me.
What was the
interview like?
Without ever knowing me, she was caging me in as
someone who was into myself. When they do interviews on the side, the
nails sort of come out. I was sort of sequestered and I heard from my
friends that after that she did an on-the-fly interview and some of the
models said she was really vicious.
Since the show is from Patti's
perspective, are you worried about how you are going to be portrayed?
I
have no idea how it is going to play out, but I can't wait to see how
they portray me or how they paint this picture of me.
Do you think
your experience with her was more positive than negative?
I would say
barely. I went to the season opening party and I was one of two or three
millionaires there from the cast of this season. I know most of them
probably had a negative experience. It was me and the other gay
millionaire, Mike Wallen, and maybe one other millionaire. She had, what,
24 millionaires and only three showed up?
Did Patti talk to you
about her dating rules?
I think she normally just does that for guys she
feels are super horny and jerks. She didn't give me that lecture.
Do
you feel they paired you with someone you felt compatible with?
Not
really. I only had three options. It was a different set-up than her
other episodes where they are at a big mixer with 10 or 20 people to
choose from.
What did your date involve?
We actually did a sit-down dinner with everyone. Patti was there, everyone in her crew, including Chelsea, and I was there with the other millionaire. The other millionaire had three straight guys to choose from and I had three gay guys to choose from.
Sounds like a lot of people.
There were like 15 of us at the dinner table. It was a big, long, two-hour sit-down dinner where you get to know the people a little bit better and then you make your choice from that. I only had three guys to choose from to begin with. That was a really different twist on the dynamic of the show.
Did you get to know them better or was the situation a turnoff?
I got to know them better but I would've rather had more options. I would have rather had a mixer-style where I would have had five minutes to talk to everyone.
What did you do for your "master date" as Patti calls it?
A couple of days later we went on our date and we went on a hot air balloon ride, a private wine tasting at an organic winery in Temecula, and then we did a sit-down lunch at the winery.
Did you enjoy your date?
Yeah, he was a nice guy but not really my speed. I have nothing bad to say about him. He was a genuinely sweet guy.
Currently, you're not a member of the Millionaire's Club. Would you consider joining again?
I wouldn't turn it away because they could maybe pull more options for me, but I would put that as a maybe.
Donahoo did not go on another date with the man he met through the Millionaire's Club and is still looking for love.
