Baltimore institute trains African AIDS workers

Institute of Human Virology in Baltimore, headed by HIV codiscoverer Robert Gallo, is using a $4.4 million Centers for Disease Control and Prevention grant to help train Nigerian health care providers in AIDS research, clinical care, and prevention. Twenty Nigerian health professionals underwent a 30-day training program at the institute in May, and another training session is to be held in September. The recently awarded Global AIDS Program grant also was used to create four centers for HIV care and prevention in Nigeria, according to William Blattner, head of IHV's epidemiology division. Each center is a network of hospitals, clinics, and community organizations.
