The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services this week issued $580 million Ryan White Title I grants to regions throughout the country to help provide HIV care to the nation's low-income HIV-positive residents, United Press International reports. The 51 grants include both formula and supplemental funds; the formula grants are issued based on the number of AIDS cases in a region, with cities with high HIV caseloads competing for the supplemental funds. Part of the funds issued by HHS will support the Minority AIDS Initiative, which aims to boost HIV prevention and care programs targeting Americans of color who are disproportionately affected by HIV.
