GLSEN announces college scholarship program
The Gay, Lesbian, and Straight Education Network will launch a scholarship program this summer for graduating high school seniors who demonstrate leadership in the fight to ensure safe schools for gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgendered students. The scholarship program will provide its recipients with financial grants over a four-year period with amounts to be determined based on student leadership and academic achievement. Donors Elliot Leonard and Roger Litz said in a statement, "In a society where LGBT activism is still more likely to earn scorn than applause, the GLSEN Scholarship Program provides a powerful affirmation of these young leaders. This program will ensure these students will continue to develop their leadership skills after high school, throughout their post-secondary educational experience, and beyond."
Some scholarships will go toward providing college funds for high school graduates who have been active leaders in LGBT activities, and other grants will underwrite participation by current high school students in GLSEN Leadership Team activities.
