Poll shows support in South Dakota for gay marriage amendment
As the November general election draws closer, nearly two out of three South Dakotans support an amendment to the U.S. Constitution to define marriage as the union of a man and a woman. Sixty-three percent favor the federal amendment, 25% oppose it, and 12% are undecided, according to a new statewide poll. Poll respondent Dee Baltrousch said President Bush is doing the right thing by asking Congress to ban same-sex marriages. Bush's position on the issue is one of the reasons she will vote for him this fall. "I feel that he has the morals and values that coincide with me," said Baltrousch. Ann Dereu said gay couples should have the same legal rights as heterosexual couples. "I don't think it's our right to judge, and I don't think the government should have the right to judge," said Dereu.
