An Arizona legislator who proposed a same-sex marriage ban announced that he will not follow through with the bill this session, the Associated Press reports.

State representative Russell Pearce, a Republican from Mesa, on Wednesday decided against pushing the bill, which would amend the state's constitution to restrict marriage to heterosexual couples, according to the AP. There was no reason given for his about-face on the measure.

In last November's election Arizona became the first state to defeat an anti-same-sex marriage ballot initiative. (The Advocate)
