Iowa senate may
extend civil rights protections to gays

Iowa senate Democrats intend to move forward this week with a bill to extend state civil rights protections to gay and lesbian Iowans. The bill would add the words ''sexual orientation'' and ''gender identity'' to a list of protected characteristics under Iowa's Civil Rights Act.
