Republican U.S. senator Larry Craig has kept his promise by not filing for reelection in light of his arrest in an undercover sex sting in a Minneapolis airport bathroom in June 2007. The deadline to file for the U.S. Senate seat representing Idaho was Friday, according to CBS News.
Though the three-term senator tried to reverse his original guilty plea, he was stripped of his seniority in the Senate. Following a media firestorm surrounding the airport arrest, Craig held a press conference on September 1, declaring, "I am not gay. I never have been gay." He vowed to resign by September 30 but later decided to finish the remainder of his term.
Thirteen candidates have filed with Idaho's secretary of state for his seat, including Republican front-runner and Idaho lieutenant governor Jim Risch. Craig endorsed Risch in November, according to KTVB. (The Advocate)
