The Miami Herald and CNN are both reporting that with nearly half of Florida's precincts reporting, Amendment 2 might well have the 60% majority required to pass. Despite tireless efforts by Equality Florida throughout the state, exit polls suggest the amendment, which would ban all legal unions not between a man and a woman, will pass.

The amendment's wording goes beyond banning same-sex couples from getting married. The amendment could open the door to preventing adults in committed, legally recognized relationships from receiving shared benefits. For example, seniors in domestic partnerships who choose not to remarry for fear of losing benefits from deceased partners could also be affected.

The Advocate's Juan Carlos Rodriguez, covering the ballot measure on the ground in South Florida, reports that at a meeting of Save Dade, an LGBT rights group, it was announced that exit polling indicates that Amendment 2 will win with 60.5% of the vote.

"SAVE goes on regardless of what happens today," Save Dade board member Juan Del Hierro said at the meeting. (The Advocate)
