Catholic Church in San Francisco Vandalized Over Prop. 8

A Catholic church in San Francisco's Castro neighborhood was vandalized with anti-Proposition 8 graffiti Sunday morning, even though the church is largely pro-gay. The Most Holy Redeemer church was defaced with black swastikas and impassioned messages, including one directed at San Francisco archbishop George Niederauer, who prominently supported Prop. 8, the San Francisco Chronicle reports.

The archbishop's last name was scrawled along the side of the church with the question "Where is the love?" the paper reports. But Niederauer aside, the Most Holy Redeemer is well known as a gay-friendly church, having participated in the city's gay pride parade in years past, according to the Chronicle. Church officials have said that most of its parishioners opposed Prop. 8, which outlawed same-sex marriage in California via a constitutional amendment.

The paper reports that most of the graffiti was washed off on Monday and that the affected areas will be painted over Tuesday. Local police are investigating the incident as a hate crime, but no suspects have been identified. (Advocate.com)
