San Francisco mayor Gavin Newsom and his wife, Jennifer Siebel Newsom, have announced they are expecting their first child.
"The mayor and the first lady are thrilled to be embarking on this adventure together, and they appreciate your good wishes," read a statement issued Wednesday by the mayor's office.
The couple got married last August. The statement was released after ValleyWag.com first reported on the pregnancy.
As Newsom gears up for a gubernatorial race, the mayor will likely face off against fellow challengers Atty. Gen. Jerry Brown, a former governor and now a staunch Proposition 8 opponent, and former eBay CEO Meg Whitman, who supported the ban on same-sex marriage.
Newsom made headlines in 2004 when he directed San Francisco city clerks to begin issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples. (Michelle Garcia, Advocate.com)
