New York City capped its week of gay pride celebrations Sunday with the massive parade drawing hundreds of thousands spectators along Fifth Avenue. Grand marshals included lesbian prom fighter Contance McMillen, Lt. Dan Choi, and Judy Shepard.
According to the New York Daily News, the march welcomed a slew of local and statewide political heavy-hitters including Attorney General Andrew Cuomo, a Democratic candidate for governor who has included marriage equality as a key plank in his campaign platform. The state senate failed to pass a marriage equality bill in December.
A bill to protect LGBT students from bullying and harassment in public schools passed the legislature last week, which provided cause for celebration on the 41st annual celebration of the Stonewall Riots.
