Thousands of people protested a gay pride march Sunday in the Serbian capital of Belgrade, shutting down the city and turning much of it into a virtual war zone. It was the first gay rights event since 2001, when ultranationalist groups violently disrupted a march. Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty writer at large (and Advocate columnist) James Kirchick, who snapped these photos of the melee, was attacked by a protester.
