Ramin Setoodeh, the gay journalist who evoked controversy with his Newsweek essay that stated that gay actors are unbelievable as straight romantic leads, is returning to the publication after a brief stint with People magazine, reports New York magazine.
Setoodeh became a lightning rod for outraged Newsweek readers, LGBT celebrities, and their allies, who deemed the essay to be "homophobic." Setoodeh departed Newsweek in June to become a staff writer at People magazine. While there, Setoodeh cowrote an article for the publication about the late Rutgers student Tyler Clementi, titled "Was Rutgers' Student Tyler Clementi Bullied to Death?" Setoodeh sent an e-mail to New York magazine that read:
"Look, People is the most-read magazine in the country, but it wasn't the right fit. I'm grateful to [editor] Larry Hackett for being supportive and letting me try something new. But Newsweek still has some of the best reporters, and young reporters, in the business. Don't count us out."
