San Francisco district attorney Kamala Harris, running for attorney general of California, has a slight lead over Republican challenger Steve Cooley. But it's still too close to call.

Harris vowed not to defend Prop. 8 in a federal appeals court, while her opponent, Republican L.A. County district attorney Steve Cooley, stated the opposite. Harris, a 46-year-old Democrat, had little name recognition outside of the Bay Area, which likely hindered her chances at statewide election.
