The Maryland Republican Party is pushing to thwart marriage equality efforts in the state legislature, where senators are set to debate a marriage bill next week.
The Washington Post reports that Maryland GOP chairman Alex X. Mooney sent out an "action alert" email Saturday urging party members to contact nine key state senators in the upcoming vote.
"Our state's long standing tradition of promoting marriage as between one man and one woman will be drastically altered to legally define marriage as between two men or two women. There is still time to put pressure on your state senator but we must act now," Mooney wrote.
"It is urgent that you contact your state senator immediately to tell them to vote no on the assault on traditional marriage," he wrote.
