A suspect has been charged in the July 30 attack of five lesbians outside the Columbia Heights Metro station in Washington, D.C.
On Tuesday, the D.C. police department issued a statement announcing the arrest of Christian Washington, 19, of Northwest D.C. on a charge of assault.
The incident, which garnered nationwide attention after two of the victims told the Washington Blade that the responding police officers refused to take a report of the attack, occurred after a man called a group of five women "dyke bitches." He and another man then proceeded to punch the women in the face and body.
"The Metropolitan Police Department is still investigating whether others were involved," said the statement.
In an August 5 statement, D.C. Police Chief Cathy Lanier said she was appalled by the officers' conduct.
"I appreciate the personal interest that Chief Lanier has shown in this case and the fact that the MPD announced an arrest in the case today," D.C. gay activist Peter Rosenstein said. "I anticipate there may be more arrests, and the LGBT community needs to follow up and make sure that the officers who mishandled this are disciplined or fired."
