After Long Wait, N.Y. Lawmaker to Wed This Weekend
The New York Assemblyman who successfully introduced a marriage equality bill three times before it finally passed both chambers last year alluded to how long he's waited to get married in invitations sent for his big event.
Daniel O'Donnell reportedly got engaged to his partner of more than 30 years, John Banta, at the state capitol moments before the state Senate voted on marriage equality in June, and he confirmed his plans in December during a radio interview. PolitickerNYgot a hold of some of the invitations sent to guests, which include many of the "yes" votes for marriage equality and Gov. Andrew Cuomo.
"John Banta and Danny O'Donnell are tying the knot," it announces, "at last."
O'Donnell, a Democrat from Manhattan, introduced the marriage equality bill for the last time in May. He said he kept a color-coded chart in his office on the vote count, and in his last effort he signed on more cosponsors than his previous three attempts. And this time, it passed the Senate as well.
The couple will be married on Sunday... at last.
