Audience Editor Edgar Ramirez here, back in your inbox with two very different stories from this week’s news that point to the same lesson: there is a price to treating LGBTQ+ rights as a political strategy rather than a matter of principle.
In Massachusetts, Rep. Seth Moulton tried to reposition himself as the younger, more politically daring Democrat by attacking transgender athletes. But voters rejected the premise decisively, as The Advocate's Christopher Wiggins reports. Sen. Ed Markey defeated Moulton by nearly 30 points, after running unapologetically on the defense of transgender people.
Then there is Milo Yiannopoulos. For years, Yiannopoulos built a career championing the far right, promoting anti-LGBTQ+ ideas and demanding increasingly aggressive immigration enforcement. After the Trump administration deported him, however, he suddenly found himself on the receiving end of the machinery he had helped cheer on.
Sad!
And in case anyone is wondering, after five years of calling himself “ex-gay,” Yiannopoulos acknowledged that he remains a gay man married to another man.
