George Kanis's photos sometimes suggest the noir, crime-scene photos of the legendary photographer Weegee. They are the sometimes disturbing but necessary documents of consent, other times they are delirious flights of fetish and fantasy reminding us the limitlessness of the human sexual imagination. Ultimately they are attempts at freedom from the everyday expectations of "normal" people. They are not pretty. If you want pretty, go look for some nice Bruce Weber photos. These images are not tricked out with studio lighting and expensive equipment. The photos are more immediate than that and suggest a deep intimacy and trust between the photographer and subjects.
