David Zimmerman has a relationship with the men he photographs that puts them at ease. But these men tend to be the kind of guys who are already at ease with their bodies. David states about his work:
“Art, in any form, is about the relationship of the artist to the subject. The space I live in when shooting is all about capturing a movement, gesture, or peacefulness that tells a common story and can isolate the viewer in a moment in time. For me it’s about that moment you’re scrolling through your feed and you suddenly stop, take a second look, breathe, then think and process. Photography is my moving mediation and my hope is that my expression is truly enjoyed.
“Growing up in Dallas, I knew of the dramatic Texas backdrop, but I craved something new and different. California had an allure to me that was beyond description. When I arrived in California and witnessed my first sunrise over Laguna Beach, I knew the risk I’d just taken in moving was all worth it. I have fallen in love with the Southern California beaches, and I am most passionate about finding a delicate balance between my subject and the dramatic landscapes.
“I encourage anyone I shoot with to add their own unique personality to a shoot. I believe life is all about expression and a shoot with me becomes a collaboration between our intertwining artistic expression. I love working this way because I feel that the end result is always something unique and special because it is not only meaningful to me but also to my subject. The passion always seems to show.”
