Users of the gay hookup app Grindr might have done a double take recently when they saw a certain ad at the bottom of their screens.
Ads for the Christian group GodLife have appeared on Grindr in several countries, including the U.S., reports U.K. site Pink News.
A GodLife representative said the group's ads were innocuous and not an attempt to convert gays to heterosexuality.
"We do not judge anyone," a spokesperson said. "We simply want you to know the love of God and what his son did to save you from your sin. If you have any questions or need prayer about something in your life please let me know. God bless you and keep you safe from all harm."
Pink News later confirmed that Grindr will remove the third-party ads, keeping in line with its policy not to accept religious ads.
"We have both direct advertisers as well as third-party ad networks which supply advertising to the app," the Grindr rep told Pink News. "The ad you reference was served by one of these third-party ad networks. While we do have safeguards in place to monitor for ads on third-party networks, we do serve billions of ads on our network, so there is the occasional chance that an inappropriate ad may appear. In this instance, we've reached out to the third-party networks to have the ad removed. While we are pleased to learn that Godlife.com seems to be an inclusionary organization, we are working to remove this ad from Grindr."
