Celebrants at Buenos Aires Pride festival and parade earlier this month had plenty of fun while also getting political. Argentina has had marriage equality since 2010, but the nation cries out for progress in other areas — for instance, there are no comprehensive nondiscrimination protections for transgender people. Pride participants called for such protections to be enacted, along with legalization of abortion and marijuana, separation of church and state, and an end to patriarchy. The presidential runoff election, coming up November 22, was also much on everyone’s mind, as liberal Daniel Scioli vies with conservative (and, at least in the past, homophobic) Mauricio Macri to succeed Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner. But amid the politicking, the event also featured great music, cheap beer, fabulous costumes, and much exposed skin. Click through to see the celebration in Argentina’s Big Apple.
