What This Author Is Passionate About

Here's what Rebekah Weatherspoon, author of romances Better Off Red and The Fling, is passionate about this month

... Girls Scouts of America.
I was overjoyed when I heard 7-year-old trans kid Bobby Montoya was finally permitted to join her local Girl Scout troop. The Girl Scouts were a big part of my childhood. My record-setting cookie sales aside, it's where I learned about serving others. There may have been some backlash about Bobby's inclusion, but I'm not sure what we as a nation expect from our teenagers, both bullies and victims, when we tell 7-year-olds that they don't belong. GSoA believes that all children should be able to participate in their community. Support that mission and donate, volunteer, or buy some Samoas.

...the goat rodeo sessions. I first heard Yo-Yo Ma, Stuart Duncan, Edgar Meyer, and Chris Thile perform their track "Attaboy" on The Colbert Report and haven't looked back. Listening to this album, a collaboration between the four artists, is believing.

The-legend-of-korrax400...The Legend of Korra. This April, Nickelodeon premiered The Legend of Korra, the follow-up to Avatar: The Last Airbender.LoK follows the new Avatar, Korra, as she masters airbending, deals with a social revolution, and gets her first taste of romance. The animation, music, and storytelling are fantastic, but I'd be lying if I said I didn't tune in for Korra herself.

...Warby Parker. Last year I snapped my $400 Anne Klein frames in half. I needed an inexpensive alternative and found Warby Parker, which offers frames and lenses for $100. It also has a "Buy a Pair, Give a Pair" program that donates glasses to a person in need.

...romance novels. Everyone loves a little escape, especially during this election cycle. Romance novels are my escape, reading them and writing them. I love Wally Lamb and Octavia Butler, but the historical romances of Beverly Jenkins, LaVyrle Spencer, Diana Gabaldon (pictured above), and Colette Moody are my true loves.

Blackgirlsguidetoweightlossx400...Black Girl's Guide To Weight Loss. I'm in the midst of a 13-year weight loss journey. I might have another 13 years to go, but Erika Nicole Kendall's site has done a lot for my mission. Kendall, who's lost over 100 pounds, tackles topics such as eating disorders, what to do with your hair during workouts, and handling dating once you've hit your healthy weight.
