The Handmaid's Tale has released its first teaser -- and it's a timely warning of events that may come.

The drama, based on the 1985 novel by Margaret Atwood, portrays a dystopia, the Republic of Gilead, which was once the United States. There, women's rights have been stripped and the only responsibility of a class called "handmaids" is to reproduce.

In the real world, threats of the defunding of Planned Parenthood and the repeal of Roe v. Wade by the incoming administration make Atwood's vision all the more terrifying.

Elisabeth Moss stars as the handmaid Offred, and the production also features out actress Samira Wiley (Orange Is the New Black), Joseph Fiennes, Yvonne Strahovski, and Alexis Bledel.

Writing credits include Atwood, Ilene Chaiken (The L Word, Empire), and Bruce Miller.
