Matt Bomer and Jonathan Bailey’s Gay Romance 'Fellow Travelers' Gets Teaser
History that we'll definitely enjoy
The teaser trailer for Matt Bomer and Jonathan Bailey’s gay historical romance Fellow Travelers came out today.
The Showtime series is based on the novel of the same name by Thomas Mallon. It follows Hawkins Fuller (Bomer) and Timothy Laughlin (Bailey) through the world of politics from the 1950s and McCarthyism and the Lavender Scare to the 1980s and the AIDS crisis.
Fellow Travelers also features actors Allison Williams, Jelani Alladin, Noah J. Ricketts, and Linus Roache.
“Bomer plays charismatic Hawkins Fuller, who maintains a financially rewarding, behind-the-scenes career in politics. Hawkins avoids emotional entanglements – until he meets Tim Laughlin (Bailey), a young man brimming with idealism and religious faith. They begin a romance just as Joseph McCarthy and Roy Cohn declare war on ‘subversives and sexual deviants,’ initiating one of the darkest periods in 20th-century American history,” a description from Showtime reads. “Over the course of four decades, we follow our five main characters – Hawk, Tim, Marcus (Alladin), Lucy (Williams), and Frankie (Ricketts) – as they cross paths through the Vietnam War protests of the 1960s, the drug-fueled disco hedonism of the 1970s and the AIDS crisis of the 1980s, while facing obstacles in the world and in themselves.”
My Policeman and Philadelphia writer Ron Nyswaner adapted the 8-episode drama from the novel.
“The nuance of a complicated, volatile queer relationship is the power balance—and that is what is amazing about Tim and Hawk,” Bailey told Vanity Fair. “Every single sex scene is a meticulous examination of power.”
“There’s a level of trust and intimacy that’s even more valuable when society is against you,” Bomer said. “You keep your secrets together.”
Fellow Travelers comes out this fall on Paramount+ with Showtime.
