Subject to Change, a new film produced as a series pilot for Australian and global streaming television that dramatizes the challenge of reconciling the "complex and difficult emotions" of growing up gay in 21st-century suburbia is already getting a lot of buzz, making it one of the most anticipated films of the coming year's festival circuit.
"Neat freak Ben (Aiden Debono), tomboy Karly (Maryann Wright) and drama queen Evie (Katy Avery)" are the leading characters, reports Towleroad, with the first two being described as "gay." though it's not clear without watching the film if that means they're a gay young man and a lesbian, respectively -- or if either or both are actually bi.
Director and creator Daniel Mercieca believes his film is a natural next step in Australian and international production and distribution as well as subject matter.
"The arrival of streaming services like Netflix, Stan and Presto means Australians will be able to watch the quality TV they want to watch - when and where they want to watch - not just the 'safe' programs," Mercieca told Australia's Gay News Network. "Subject to Change has strongest appeal with a young adult demographic (15-36) yet still can find an emotional connection with all viewers, in a similar way to Puberty Blues. It is relatable, realistic and gritty."
Thirteen 22- to 25-minute episodes of the series are currently in development, reports Gay News Network. Most of the funding has so far come from the director.
"We currently have no development funding but look forward to discussions with interested co-producers in the New Year." Mercieca said.
One thing is clear, the actors who play the three leads are easy on the eyes, full of life and big on intensity. Watch the teaser for Subject to Change below.
