Soap Star: "I Was Fired for Religious Beliefs"

One Life to Live actress Patricia Mauceri says she was axed from the soap earlier this year because her religious beliefs were at odds with a planned gay story line.

The actress tells Fox News it wasn’t the gay plotline she objected to, but rather her character’s handling of the issue. A devout Christian, Mauceri says she objected to the way the writers wanted her character -- a deeply religious, Latina mother -- to react to her son coming out of the closet.

Mauceri says it was those objections that got her fired -- she says her character would not have been accepting.

"I did not object to being in a gay story line,” Mauceri said in a statement. “I objected to speaking the truth of what that person, how that person would live and breathe and act in that story line," she said. "And this goes against everything I am, my belief system, and what I know the character's belief system is aligned to."

The actress was replaced by Saundra Santiago, who performed the scene in question on Friday’s show. Producers for One Life to Live declined to comment on why Mauceri had been replaced.

Mauceri says she is exploring her legal options.

As a Christian woman myself, I am in total agreement with Patricia Maurceri. I stopped watching the show because of this sstoryline. Most of my neighbors (those who are home in the daytime) stopped watching it, too. I respect her for standing up to OLTL. More of us should have the guts to choose the things that are of God and not what's popular with show business or with today's politicians. Ms. Maurceri, if you are reading this, God will richly reward you for your decision.

    R. Valentine may have a point, except for where he completely overlooks the fact that she was fired for refusing to do her job. You poor little xtians and your faux persecution complexes are funny!

Too bad about this. If this woman had been a Muslim, Mormon, Catholic, Scientologist, Buddhist, Gay, Transexual, or of any other non-Christian belief, no one would have dared object to her concern. To fire her because she is a Christian and her beliefs were offended by the script, is a violation of her constitutional rights. Isn't it revealing that only the Christian faith is opposed by so many all over the world. It's just as Jesus said, "You will be hated for My name's sake." Could it be that Jesus IS the only way to assure your place in heaven for eternity?

I wonder how many of these actors who have reservations about gay storylines would portray someone who kills or steals. I would say all of them.

She isn't a writer on the show, so she can't actually say what her character would do. If you didn't want to do the job she was being paid to do, act not write, then she deserved to be replace. All she is doing now is trying to get some attention.

She was hired to ACT. PERIOD. She was not hired to write the soap and her personal convictions are completely irrelevent. If she is unwilling or unable to perform her job, which is to portray a FICTIONAL character as the WRITERS of the show have decided they want the character to be portrayed as - then she SHOULD be fired.

Reading many different reports of this story, Advocate's writer has made this a difficult one to decipher by poor use of verbs, adverbs, etc.. Bottom line, the writers had Ms Mauceri's character 'accepting' of the relationship. She stated that is against her beliefs. "Reportedly the soap opera wanted to go against stereotype and show Carlotta as a gay friendly Latina mother. The actress allegedly vehemently protested that story decision, resulting in show brass replacing her."

    Comment:

Patricia Mauceri is not a soap star. She was not on contract and had a relatively minor role on the show. Her character, Carlotta, thought her son was gay, but he is not. Her son had bought a book, How to Tell Your Parents You're Gay, for his roommate, Officer Oliver Fish. When Carlotta saw the book, she jumped to the erroneous conclusion that her son is gay and was very accepting of him. It was Mauceri who injected her religious beliefs in this situation. She objected to how her role was being written. It is not unusual for soap actors to disagree with storylines and how their characters are written, but they do their job. Mauceri had absolutely no clout in this situation. I am glad that the show did not give in to her. Not all Catholics agree with the Church on homosexuality and other issues.
