Maine Marriage Foes Distort AP Headline

A new commercial urging Maine voters to repeal the marriage equality law uses a distorted Associated Press headline.

Stand for Marriage Maine appears to have distorted a headline from the Associated Press in its new Catholic Church–sponsored television advertisement urging voters to repeal the state’s marriage equality law in November.

The 30-second ad, which began airing Tuesday, includes a frame occurring at about the 18-second mark that shows the Associated Press logo attributed to the headline “Homosexual Advocacy Group Accuses Maine Diocese of Violating Tax Law.”

However, as Joe Sudbay at AmericaBlog points out, the AP would not use the word “homosexual” in such a context.

“That headline only exists on antigay, wingnut sites like [CNSNews.com],” writes Sudbay. “It's not from the Associated Press. We know the AP gets really irritated over use of its content. What will AP do when its content is distorted in a homophobic TV ad?”

In its style guide, the Associated Press suggests that writers avoid the use of the word “homosexual,” except “in clinical contexts or references to sexual activity.”

In fact, the headline as presented in the commercial appears to be a distortion of an actual May 21, 2009, headline from the AP that read, “Gay Rights Group: Maine Diocese Violating Tax Law.”

Back then, gay rights advocates charged that the Roman Catholic Diocese of Maine was violating IRS rules by contributing to the campaign to repeal the marriage equality law in Maine.

Now, the bishop of Maine claims to have collected hundreds of thousands of dollars for the antigay effort in a second collection from parishioners this past weekend. The money apparently is being used to finance a commercial that includes a distorted AP headline.

The Catholic Church claims to "love" and "respect" gay people. Taking away our civil rights is neither "love" nor respect. Now, they are blatantly interfering in the political process from the pulpits of their church. Isn't this against the law? The government should investigate and yank their tax-exempt status if they have violated it. I am outraged that my tax dollars support this church's immoral effort to subvert the 14th Amendment to our Constitution.

I don't mean to be overly cynical, but just like the National Organization for Marriage, they don't CARE if they get sued. By the time anything actually gets in front of a judge the election will be over. Isn't it strange how the very people that are using religion to justify discrimination will stoop to lies and deception. They're just hoping that their tactics work and if their side comes out ahead at the ballot box, no matter what legal complications they find themselves, they will consider it to have been worth it.

If the advocate will post this as they have not posted my last months of comments: I believe that the whole argument for unequal rights is a deception. Unfortunatly even though many people know that what they are doing is wrong they continue to do what they are told by their churches or other extreemist type influence such as fox news or rush limbaugh. I have become very open about discussing the issue with people I know and it is surprising that I have yet to hear a factual argument from anyone. The truth is that there us no statistic to prove that children are safer or the quality of straight marriages has improved in the states that have successfully outlawed same sex marriage or civil unions. If anything the opposite has been happening, divorce rates are lower in places where there are equal rights. People need to be brave enough to say no to the churches because they are simply wrong about this.

Catholics give to support a gay marriage ban and also to pay for the damage done by the pedophile priests that are having sex with their sons. Where is sanity? I resent the fact that I have to subsidize this lunacy with my tax dollars.

How come our leadership organizations haven't suggested peaceful demonstrations in front of these catholic churches letting parishioners know that their contributions are going to deprive American citizens of their rights? If we could engage any of these catholics in dialogue informing them of what the church is actually doing with their money, perhaps we could make some inroads. I'm totally blown away by how mean-spirited these churches are by going out of their way to deprive citizens of existing rights, and I imagine at least some catholics would be similarly surprised and outraged. Maybe outraged enough to speak up to their church leaders and eventually, enough parishioners will object to that kind of spending that it'll end. That's the kind of dialogue we have to engage in to facilitate change in our f*cked up society. It's up to us. Who's with me? Get the poster board and markers and meet me at the new roman catholic church in Plumstead.

The worst distortion stems from the word "advocacy" used in place of "rights." According to the altered headline, the AP seems to be saying that the gay rights group was advocating homosexuality, when it was actually supporting gay people's rights. The AP wouldn't misrepresent the group's stance and activities that way, and I definitely think LGBT groups and the media should call out the hate group on this.

Sadly, the Catholic Church is a powerful organization and no doubt has influence over the IRS and the White House. I have given up hope that our federal government, including Mr. Obama will come to our aid. As for the special offering last Sunday....when you put the fear of sin and hell fire into a persons mind, of course they will contribute. I wonder if Mr. Malone (to call him Bishop is wrong as he is no pastor to the people), isn't just following the man from Rome with the big hat, pretty dress and ruby red slippers orders??? I do hope the AP investigates and sues!

And so WHAT IF IT WERE TRUE? I think it's high time that ALL churches of whatever delusion be investigated by the IRS. Screw them - tax ALL religions!
