Clinton: U.S. to Fight Antigay Violence Worldwide

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton vowed in a recent address that the United States would fight antigay violence wherever it exists in the world.

Clinton made the remarks at the Roosevelt Institute's Four Freedoms Medals Gala Dinner on September 11 in New York City, where she received the institute's Four Freedoms Award.

"[We] must condemn violence based on sexual orientation and gender identity,” said Clinton, according to journalist Rex Wockner. “In country after country after country, young men and women are persecuted, are singled out, even murdered in cold blood, because of who they love or just based on claims that they are gay.”

"We are starting to track violence against the LGBT community, because where it happens anywhere in the world, the United States must speak out against it and work for its end,” Clinton continued, according to Wockner. “Through our annual human rights report, we are documenting human rights abuses against LGBT communities worldwide. And we are seeking out partners at the United Nations such as Brazil, France, Sweden, and the Netherlands to help us address these human rights abuses."

In March, the Obama administration announced that it would sign a United Nations declaration calling for the global decriminalization of homosexuality, in a reversal of policy from the Bush administration.

Yes, and our campaign to stop violence against women world wide worked so very well. We need to start with America first and right npow that doesn't seem to be anyones priority.

Dennis Altman writes in the Fairfax Media about this issue. http://www.smh.com.au/opinion/society-and-culture/punished-for-being-yourself-20090929-gb0j.html This is a global battle against a rising tide of homophobia worldwide. At least the Obama Administration is saying that it wants to be on the right side.

That's quite a commitment, Secretary of State Clinton. How do you propose to fulfill this promise? Noble, yes. Important, definitely. But what about violence against sexual minorities here in the good ol' US of A? What about Matthew Shephard 11 years ago? What about Larry King, what was he, 13, 15? What about trans men and women who are brutally beaten and murdered daily? We can't even get a Hate Crimes act passed. How are we going to be an international force? When our own government succumbs to the tyranny of the majority allowing them to repeal state supreme court decisions because of ignorance and prejudice, when our own government propagates a climate of discrimination, intolerance and disdain in the military, in marriage, in housing and employment and refuses to even acknowledge that crimes against us need to be tracked, who the hell are we to suggest monitoring the rest of the world for violence? It's bizarre to me. Actions speak louder than words. Action now.

Someone needs to tell the Secretary of State that it's useless to run for Brazil's support. The Brazilian President, Mr. Lula, has just signed a decree to make adoption easier. According to that document even foreigners can easily adopt a Brazilian child, but it does not allows same sex couples to do the same. It doesn't even recognize same sex couple as family. This is a theme that he is ignoring and pretending that doesn't exist.

I don't believe this administration. They have done nothing to stop the killings of gays in Irag, a country we support and practically control. Why would they, didn't they say our relationships were basically the same as pedophiles?

This has absolutely ZERO to do with the bible. It is about human rights. The bible has no place in the white house. None. It is the bible in the white house, and religion mixed with government policy in general, that has and continues to cause most of the problems in the world today.
