N.Y. Gay Activists Storm Xmas Party

Hiram Monserrate X390 (YOUTUBE) | ADVOCATE.COM

Gay activists brazenly crashed the Tuesday night Christmas party of New York state senator Hiram Monserrate, a convicted domestic abuser who voted against a marriage equality bill.

“Hiram believes marriage should be between one man, one woman, and a broken bottle,” screamed an unidentified gay activist at the Queens fete, which coincidentally or not took place on the one-year anniversary of the violent incident in which Monserrate dragged his girlfriend through his apartment building's lobby and was accused of slashing her face, which he contended was an accident. Monserrate still represents portions of Queens in the New York state senate.

“It’s the one-year anniversary of Hiram slashing his girlfriend! Hiram’s a wife beater! He can get married and we can’t!” screamed the same unidentified protester before throwing the event into chaos and being tossed out of the party.

The protesters also took aim at Monserrate’s gay chief of staff, Wayne Mahlke. “Are you proud of yourself, Wayne?” yelled the protester. As Mahlke shoved the activist out the door, he responded, “I have taken my position. The senator’s position is not my position.”

The activists were from a group called THE POWER, an ACT UP–style organization that advocates direct political action. THE POWER captured the pandemonium on a YouTube video (see below) that had a message reading, “Merry Christmas Queens. This is only the beginning!”

From their web site, they look and sound like a bunch of HuffPo loons. Until they crash NObama's parties then I believe their sincerity. It shouldn't be that hard!

These interlopers are brave heroes. All methods and types of activism are needed. To tell the truth, I'm a little tired of the calm, uncle Tom types of HRC activism. I want to get married and LIVE, out loud.

I agree with Randy. This is no better than those ugly teabaggers interrupting town halls. And it does inspire the opposition to behave equally badly or worse. It does not help our cause. Take it to the appropriate venue, organize better to get publicity, and do it right, not by acting like a rube.

This is wrong. There is a time and place for everything and this is not the way. By doing this, you open yourself up to being demonstrated against at any time. The next gay wedding, 50 protesters storm the hall. I can go on but I think I made my point. You can protest, walk the street and campaign, but there must be a barrier, an understanding that both sides can go about their personal lives. This personal act approach was counteractive and used against us during the Prop 8 in CA. I don't want our events protested as well. Do unto others. We see Phelps as wrong for protesting at burials and memorials. This is the same in a different coat. Wrong place, wrong time.

Great idea, lousy execution, and as far as I know, this received zero mainstream press coverage. Also, while my gut says churches are fair targets, ACT-UP'S disruption of services at NYC's St. Patrick's back in their day hurt their cause a great deal. My head says- danger all gay sons!

This should happen daily. We need to be in the faces of the public. We are tired of this bullshit. We only want what is fair for all. Keep the pressure on these politicians. Keep gay activists in the news. Thank you!!!
