Obama Nominates Out Gay U.S. Attorney

The White House Thursday nominated out lesbian Laura E. Duffy to serve as U.S. attorney for the southern district of California.

Duffy, who has been with the district office since 1997, is known for leading the prosecution team that brought down one of the biggest drug cartels in California. The district covers San Diego and Imperial counties.

According to The San Diego Union-Tribune, she is “well-regarded” among defense attorneys and federal prosecutors. If confirmed by the U.S. Senate, Duffy would be in charge of 120 assistant U.S. attorneys, 38 part-time special assistant U.S. attorneys, and 168 support staffers.

“We are thrilled with President Obama’s nomination of Laura Duffy,” Mario Guerrero, government affairs director for the LGBT group Equality California, told DC Agenda. “Her appointment as U.S. attorney is an important milestone for the LGBT community as well as an inspiration.”

Bruce's comment is right on point. True Conservativism--respect for individual rights, a belief in the separation of church and state, a desire for limited government--should be respected by all of us, especially gay people. However, what passes for Conservatism today is simply selfishness, rapacious capitalism, religious bigotry, and militarism. The Republican Party at one time was respectable; it produced people of principle. Now it is simply the party of bigots and special interests.

Well, Bobby deserves credit for one thing at least, he's stopped pretending to be a troll, unlike MarkM who imagines that his anti-democrat/anti-Obama posts are confusing folks here and thereby helping his extreme right-wing base. Gays, like anyone else, can appreciate the positive ideas of conservatism. Indeed, principles like 'individual freedom' and 'less gov't interference in private citizens' lives ' are philosophically supportive of LGBT equality. Unfortunately, in this country, by joining with the religious right, conservatives incorporated their agenda, and this influence has distorted true conservatism. In order to accommodate the radical christians' religious beliefs the conservative principle of individual freedom has been warped - to exclude freedom of sexual expression. The religious right also demands exceptions to the principle of less gov't interference to prevent LGBT equality in marriage, adoption, even to make LGBT sex illegal again which many would if they could.

So sad to see someone both so selfish and so stupid as Bobby or Gay Elephant or whoever he is. He is happy to drink the Kooolaid of the Republicans, and cares so little about the future of the country that he is quite willing to allow the multinational corporations to sell us down the river and render the nation as second-rate as he is. Obama had to increase the national debt to rescue the country from the mess made by Bush and his Wall Street friends. They repaid him by taking billions of dollars in bonuses. Unfortunately, Obama lacks the balls to restore democracy to this country. Our people are so stupid and so poorly educated that they are easily distracted by sports and entertainment and wedge issues. The only loyalties the Republicans have is to the corporations who fund their campaigns and to the religious bigots to whom they pander. If the Republicans had their way, they wouldn't even let Bobby make his pickups via adam4adam.

Bobby and Gay Elephant...Don't you have a black guy to drag from your bumper waiting for you in your condo parking lot? Or maybe your waiting for that nice, gentle, pregnant teen whose going sorrowfully for her abortion today. Perhaps you could get offline long enough to deny her the right to do so. But I forget...silly me...Saturday morning is your cartoons and Captain Crunch time. It is always followed by your Young Republican Klan meeting. Have fun you bigoted piece of shit!

The wealthy are the best group of people because they're the ones who spend money and create jobs. I saw Bill Maher's comedy special, he bitches about the rich having private planes, guess what? One private plane creates lots of jobs in the manufacturing, repair and maintenance. When was the last time a poor or middle class person gave you a job? Maybe you should watch John Stossel on the Fox Business Channel and learn a little bit about libertarianism. As a gay man, I'm very self-reliant, the government NEVER paid for my education, I never got a job through affirmative-action, in fact, Uncle Sam has never done anything for met, yet I'm supposed to believe in Obama when he says he wants to give me "free" health care? I would rather be rich under a republican than poor under a democrat. Besides, did Bush put gays in concentration camps? No. The worst thing he did was trying to ban gay marriage, yet he failed at that and didn't try again, did he?

Well Bobby, go back to hooking up on Adam4Adam. And what the fuck does Santa Monica have to do with anything??? Bush was a war mongering elitist who cared about one group of people in this country, the wealthy. Sounds like your only connection to the gay community is your dick, typical "gay" republican.

Oh, and who's spending more than Bush did in 8 years? Obama! Who's raising the national debt by 3 trillion bucks? Obama! And no, I'm not Gay Elephant. As for gay rights, as long as I can hook up with guys at adam4adam I have all the gay rights I need. I am much more worried about big government progressives that want to raise everyone's taxes to fund their social programs. Ever been to Santa Monica, California? They give homeless people there $300 a month.

What Bobby, or GayElephant, or whatever other troll he is leaves out is that Guest soon resigned because the Bush State Department discriminated against him and his partner. As impatient as I am with our "fierce advocate" Obama, there is no question that Bush and McCain and Palin would be immeasurable worse, both for gay people in particular and for the country in general. Bush almost single-handedly turned the country into a second-rate country whose standard of living is probably around 26th in the world. When he came into the office we were the indisputable superpower and the leader in most measures of civilization. Now we are a client state of China, with a national debt almost incalculable. Amazing what 8 years of Republican rule can do.

Guest may have been the first openly gay ambassador to be confirmed by the Senate but that's only because the Repubs refused to confirm James Hormel when Clinton appointed him in 1999. Clinton made a recess appointment to get around the bigot blockade.
