Nev. Taxi Agency Calls Gays "Diseased"

TAXI AUTHORITY LAS VEGAS X390 (GRAB) | ADVOCATE.COM

The Nevada Taxicab Authority, the state agency charged with monitoring cabs on the roadways, promulgates a policy that lists gay people among high risks for transmitting disease to agency employees and the public, along with drug users and prostitutes.

According to CBS 13 in Las Vegas, which reported on the agency’s policies and procedures, “the heading is Exposure to Communicable Diseases, spelling out how the TA can protect its employees and the public from those suspected of having infections.”

Under the rules for “custody,” the policy advises that “persons of high-risk groups, including homosexuals, intravenous drug users, prostitutes and others are to be treated with caution. Where violence or an altercation is likely, when practical, protective disposable gloves and an eye and face shield should be worn.”

Although the Taxicab Authority is focused on the taxi industry, officers have discretion to involve themselves in other public matters. That makes the comparison of gay people to criminals and characterization as a disease risk all the more troubling, say gay advocates, who criticize the agency for intolerant attitudes toward gay people and racial minorities.

“Nevada Equal Rights Commissioner and longtime gay rights activist Lee Plotkin regards the policy as a relic of the past — an anachronism — especially in light of the expensive marketing campaign run by the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority to attract free-spending gay and lesbian tourists to Las Vegas,” reports CBS 13. “Plotkin says the idea that a state agency views such visitors as disease risks is abhorrent.”

Although the authority said it approved new language that is nonoffensive to gays in 2007, the old manual is still being distributed to field officers. A Taxicab Authority board member plans to investigate.

The story was done by George Knapp of Channel 8. He reported on a policy that existed in 2007 within the Taxicab Authority, not today. He used as his source a disgruntled ex-exployee who was fired for some really bad stuff last year and has lost all appeals about that firing that I know of. George has repeatedly used this source for his "hard news" stories even though Mr. Knapp KNOWS (just look at the Taxicab Authority web site) that his source is not exactly the truth-telling, cream of the crop guy he pretends to be. Metro, the police agency in Las Vegas, still uses this same policy but will hopefully remove the reference to homosexuals. Las Vegas doesn't hate you but unfortunately, you were used as a pawn because George Knapp hates the Taxicab Authority, the cab drivers and the cab company owners. Please do not let this journalistic garbage influence your travel decisions. Investigate for yourself and make up you own mind.

As the Nevada Equal Rights Commissioner quoted, I can tell clarify that the policy 'was' changed - just not effectively expressed - in 2007. The Taxicab Authority is currently working on righting the wrong. Expect a positive result sooner rather than later.

"high risk groups", huh? I suppose that this fine agency doesn't know that the highest risk group for contracting sexually transmitted diseases is actually african american women under 30. So what should they do? Ban black women from using the taxi? How stupid. But this is only the beginning of the criminalization phase of the gay sexualization by our society. Logic: Gays are more sexually deviant and active and choose to do so. Gays are more, therefore, predisposed to HIV. Gays are public sex seekers. Conclusion: gays are a high level threat to society and should be rounded up by the state. It is fairly obvious and terrifying as to what happens next- just look at the third reich.

I'm so pleased that Nevada has so much business it doesn't need or want any business from gay patrons in the other 49 states and the District of Columbia. /sarcasm off

1 call from the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority would clear this matter up PROMPTLY. If you wish to call or write to complain, I would suggest contacting both the taxi authority AND the LVC&VA.

It's time to boycott Las Vegas. I'm sure the policy will be revised once such a boycott is announced.
