White House Condemns Malawi Ruling

The White House issued the following statement Thursday saying the United States "strongly condemns" the conviction and 14-year sentencing of a gay couple in Malawi.

Statement by the Press Secretary on Court Ruling in Malawi:

"The United States strongly condemns the conviction and harsh sentencing of Steven Monjeza and Tiwonge Chimbalanga in Malawi. The criminalization of sexual orientation and gender identity is unconscionable, and this case mars the human rights record of Malawi. We urge Malawi and all countries to stop using sexual orientation or gender identity as the basis for arrest, detention, or execution."

More lips service from NObama. Wish NObama cared for gay people the way Reagan cared for Christians in Eastern Europe back in Commie time. A few Christians imprisoned and you heard Reagan threatening economic sanctions. Nowadays, all you can expect from NObama is for him to pick his face off a plate of "Oregon Wagyu Beef in Oaxacan Black Mole" (served with Herrera Cabernet Sauvignon 2006 “Selección Rebecca”) for a few minutes and spit out some meaningless token words so the homos can shut up and for him to get back to his party. That's fine. Get back to your lavish state dinner with the illegals in chief from Mexico while the rest of us are living from paychecks to paychecks. We wouldn't want you to miss your "Chocolate-Cajeta Tart" and your Graham Cracker Crumble and Goat Cheese Ice Cream! Just remember. It'll be one of few last meals as our president. There won't be a second term.

Did gay people being imprisoned matter to the government of the US enough to cut off Malawi's funding?

I'm sorry but these words coming from the White House ring hollow when our own constitution doesn't protect gay people here. Certainly we're not putting gay people in jail. Anymore. But we have in the time that I have lived. I don't think the white house has the moral high ground in this. The truth is, we're not that far removed from a time when gay people were jailed regularly right here in the good ol' USA. Pass ENDA, get rid of DADT and DOMA and then make a statement.

Umm, like I've said our leaders do just a tiny bit to make us think they care. But this little paragraph will do nothing to change things. They need to start by revoking all financial aide to that country to get their attention. Then the US should consider setting a better example, they can do this by eliminating DOMA and DADT immediatly. As is stands now it's one country with policies of discrimination condemning another country with policies of discrimination. Although the US does not send people to prison for being angaged to someone of the same gender, we do have plenty of religious based laws of bigotry of our own to deal with, that need to change. Then we need to stop creating laws based on religious beliefs, whether you are Christian or not you have to agree that this is a bad idea. It only hurts people.
