Obama, White House Celebrate Pride

President Barack Obama told LGBT advocates who attended a White House Pride reception Tuesday that he would stand “shoulder to shoulder” with them as they fight for equality across the country.

“The fact that we have activists here is a reminder that change never comes – or at least never begins – in Washington,” Obama said. “It is when ordinary people out of love for a mother or a father, a son or a daughter, or a husband or a wife, speak out against injustices that have been accepted for too long.”

The group of about 300 seemed smaller than at last year’s event and although it included some of the usual Washington suspects, White House officials also made an effort to invite younger activists from across the country who gave Obama a very warm welcome even if not all of them are thrilled with his policies.

Twenty-six year old Morgan Keenan who works with the St. Louis-based youth organization GAY (Growing American Youth) called it “progress” that the White House even holds such a reception but also expressed disappointment on LGBT equality advances.

“I know a lot of people in D.C. sort of play nice sometimes,” Keenan said, “well, I’m in the states and I’m very angry about it.” When Keenan pulled the lever for Obama, he said he expected more “blanket support” for LGBT issues and a faster withdrawal of the troops from the wars overseas.

The president welcomed activists to the East Room at a time when he is alternately earning praise and drawing criticism for his progress on the LGBT agenda items on which he campaigned.

The White House has issued a series of smaller policy announcements that are being carried out at the agency level such as extending limited benefits to same-sex partners of federal workers, the expansion of sick leave to non-biological, non-adoptive parents under the Family Medical Leave Act, and helping to equalize hospital visitation rights for same-sex partners.

Obama announced that Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius “sent a letter today asking these hospitals to adopt these changes now – even before the rule change is adopted.” The new rule must go through several months of public comment periods before it becomes official policy.

But the larger concerns like repealing the Defense of Marriage Act and passing the Employment Nondiscrimination Act to protect gay and transgender workers appear to have fallen off the map. Ending “don’t ask, don’t tell” is in process but the White House was a reluctant player in lobbying legislators for passage.

Still, Obama reminded the crowd, “Here’s the bottom line: We have never been closer to ending that discriminatory policy.”

White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs Tuesday depicted the president as taking steps toward making good on his promises from the 2008 election.

“Hospital visitation is something that the President always talked about during the campaign,” Gibbs said in response to a question from The Advocate. “So I think many of the things you see happening, being implemented by this White House are implementing promises that the president made on the campaign trail and obviously there are things that you can do to demonstrate your values through executive action.”

But Richard Socarides, former LGBT adviser to President Bill Clinton, isn’t as impressed.

“Despite a steady trickle of these small scale positive steps, Obama shows no willingness to address our key issues,” said Socarides, who did not attend the event. “Marriage equality and employment anti-discrimination legislation are nowhere on the White House radar, while they willingly defer to the military on ‘don’t ask, don’t tell.’” (Continued on next page)

Hey Grandma, when will you have something with substance to say rather than this usual name calling. It is getting boring and redundant. But I do suspect that you are a person that is posting with different names, as we can see that there are other people that automatically parrot every post you say and agree with you following every one of your posts. This is weird, but yet expected if it were true, and a real vice of true hardcore internet troll.

"I'm reading these post and some of you people whom are posting these comments seem angry." No YOU are angry because YOU cannot provide adequate proof that Obama has done at least ONE thing that has improved the status of gays. Not even one. YOU have failed on that, and now YOU vent YOUR anger on those who seek to be convinced not entertained with gay receptions or talking points, but want REAL and legitimate policy changes that SCOTUS can use to make gays a suspect class of people worthy of constitutional protection. Pleas copy this comment and give it to YOUR Messiah next time he invites YOU over to the White House for tea and crumpets while YOU massage his ego.

Jason, the reason so many comments seem inexplicably angry at Obama is because they're written by right-wing trolls.

Are you kidding me? I'm reading these post and some of you people whom are posting these comments seem angry. What happened when Fmr. President George H.W. Bush invited GLBT to the White House? Or Fmr. President George W. Bush invited GLBT to the White House? They Didn't. Them and their Military buddies, think that GLBT are a bunch of fruits or sinners. How about DADT? that is Fmr. President Clinton's Policy, and people have the audacity,to blame President Obama, because things didn't work, the way it was planned. Well guess what me being a 47 years young, openly Bi African American, want to say to the President and First Lady, Thank You. They didn't have to do a thing, and they open their doors, for a community, most people would rather kill, than respect them as human beings, taxpayers and voters. People in the United States pf America take way to much for granted. Instead of criticizing this young intelligent President and First Lady how about some kindness and gratitude.

You know how a child will drag his feet or do a crummy job when given a chore he hates? He's hoping you'll do it yourself or never ask him for anything again. That's Obama on GLBT rights. He signs off on the least contentious issues, flips on marriage equality, and is nowhere to be heard when senior officers and retired generals say that DADT is unfair and must be overturned. Then we get another study and the military polls families of servicemembers to see if "they're ready yet" for gay and lesbian soldiers. On so many issues Obama has failed to be a leader. GLBT equal rights is one of them. I wish he was the leader he sounded like on the campaign trail.

@Melvin while I agree with you that none of those other choices would have been better. That doesn't mean I'm willing to accept less then "REAL" change especially when the person I'm expecting it from made so many promises to fullfill said change. All of what he (Obama) has done to this point has been little more then policy chances within depts or memordarndums all of which can and will be undone and changed back by the next republican president. The only real change we've seen so far was the signing into law of the mattew shepard hate crimes law which Obama had little or nothing to do with bring about. I don't agree that one should continue to stay in a bad relationship simple because the abuser lies to me face to face telling me they love me. That's about what your suggesting that even as bad as the democrats are lying to us on the campagain trail to gain our support and then don't nothing once in office it's much better then having no one to vote for.

Again, if only people like Melvin would stop making up excuses and start to show us what Obama has done to improve the status of gay men and lesbian women, there wouldn't be such a need for his babel that only blows smoke up Obama's ass. And what could have happen under McCain? Pretty much the same, DADT still on the books, DOMA still on the books... The only difference I see is that Obama is more willing to put on show for you to keep you at bay and to shut you up. And BTW I'm not a McCain person, I think he is one of the worst Senators my state has ever had. I'm just saying that both men lack in substance even though they are different in appearance.

    Comment:

@sweetbrandigirl2004. Your comment about not voting for Obama because of his lack luster support of the 'big' issues of our community no doubt are genuine, but IMO shortsighted. Who would have done better? McCain? Romney? Huckabee? I don't think so. Hillary would be the only one and she is not running. Do you believe McCain would have allowed any of what the Obama administration has done for us now, no matter how little you may think that is. Would McCain even have let a group of us in the White House for an advent specifically for us? I don't think so. Our choice is to align ourselves with those who say and do things, even if they are baby steps. They are steps forward, not backward. Think fully on what a vote for the other side would mean. We know what happened when the likes of Reagan and the Bush administration for us. Nothing. Ignoring. Debasement of our existence.
