Cuomo Will Make Gay Marriage a “Priority”

New York attorney general and Democratic gubernatorial candidate Andrew Cuomo said Thursday that he would make it a “priority” to pass same-sex marriage legislation if elected, something that he believes he could achieve in his first year in office in 2011.

According to State of Politics, Cuomo responded to a question from a reporter at one of his attorney general press conferences.

“My opinion, from my policy point of view, it is a priority,” he said. State of Politics reports that, “He also voiced confidence that he could get it done in his first year on the job — something that has so far eluded both Eliot Spitzer and Gov. David Paterson.”

City Hall News
argues that Cuomo’s discussion of the hot political issue at the press conference marks a departure from the careful way the attorney general has approached marriage equality since being elected to office in 2006.

“Asked to clarify why he was comfortable now speaking — at a government event behind a podium with the attorney general seal — on a matter he had specifically avoided discussing previously, Cuomo described the situation as wearing ‘two hats,’” reports City Hall.

Cuomo said, “I’m still doing my job as attorney general, that’s what today is all about, but I’m also campaigning as governor of New York, and as a candidate for governor, people want to know."

Cuomo, who announced his candidacy last month, has made support for same-sex marriage and other social issues one of five planks in his reform-minded platform.

@Phillip in Reseda; Mr. Cuomo would make an OUTSTANDING Governor, in the footsteps of his father. As AG; he has to follow state law regarding death penalty issues. He is NOT free to decide such things, himself. @John in WF; You're right, dear brolther. Happily, some of those Senators are up for re-election this fall. I hope and pray that LGBT New Yorkers will do all they can to defeat them on election day. We need EVERY ally we can get. Mr. Cuomo has a track record of support for the LGBT community. Please God, the voters in the Empire State have the good sense to make him their next Governor.

This scumbag wants to be governor again. A killer was being sought in a state that had the death penalty and had the brainstorm that if he killed somebody in New York, he would be arrested there and NOT be put to death for the life he took in the other state. He cut the throat of a ten year old boy. Cuomo came to his rescue and the killer got away with his scheme. NO TO CUOMO!!.

Every gay person reading this article should send him a couple of dollars. He is putting his career on the line and should have all the support he can get. I applaud him and wish him much success, this is a good and decent man, and not just because he is on "our" side, but one the side of what is just.

It's great to have the NY State Assembly and NY Governor on the side of same sex civil marriage equality, however, it was the NY State Senate that voted against equality (despite taking our tax dollars to pay their salaries and family benefits). We who live in NY must vote out every NY State Senator who voted against equality and vote in only representatives who will vote for equality. Go to www.fightbackpac.com for more information.
