Bill O'Reilly: Stop DADT

BILL O'REILLY ON LENO X390 (GRAB) | ADVOCATE.COM

Fox News host Bill O'Reilly thinks President Barack Obama should just sign an executive order to repeal "don't ask don't tell."

"It's just not fair, they should stop this nonsense," he said.

He and Tonight Show host Jay Leno were speaking about Dan Choi, a West Point graduate and Iraq War veteran, who after months of speaking out, was discharged from the Army National Guard last week.

Video of the exchange is below:

Kayden, if you think Bill O'Reilly is not a republican just because he claims so than you're as phoney as he is. People like you are what's wrong with this country, too many people with not enough brains to think for themselves.

First off, Bill O'Reilly IS NOT a Republican, he's an independent and has said so many times. He's also criticized BOTH parties. Second, a lot of his positions on things are quite Moderate, he does not label himself as anyone on the right or left. Its stupid to do that, and you only limit yourself. Truth doesn't have a label or "side". Third, he plays devil's advocate a lot, when talking about certain issues, when he raises questions opposing sides will, it takes a real uneducated person not to see when he does this, as there is often legitimate arguments on both sides. Fourth, O'Reilly also does support gay marriage, and adoptions because he feels nobody should be denied those kinds of things. It would help a lot if people actually watched his FULL shows, or read his book, and didn't listen to left-wing media, or smear sites... You might learn something. If you refuse to do so, don't call yourself "open minded" or "compassionate" or a "free thinker" because you aren't.

Bill has always disliked this policy and said so. He usually supports most pro equal rights legislation/rights with the exception of using the word "marriage". ( I don't agree at all!). He has for as long as I have heard him speak say he supported civil unions. I don't always agree with him for sure but he is not the devil and it's not a sign of the apocolypse that he says something positive about the gay community. Stop getting ALL your news people from the Huffington Post, Joy Behar, etc....Balance yourselves. It's the key to life. And if you don't agree, then look at it this way....a wise person once said you should always know what your enemy is up to and planning against you. You will never know what thay may be if you only listen to one side of the media or listen to those who only share your opinion. Stop demonizing people and try listening for once even if you don't agree. You then fight the ones with whom you don't agree without calling them names like 10 year olds. Fight Fair

An executive order is nice, but it is not a lasting change. An act of Congress is much more effective, which is why Obama is going that route. It is coming, we just have to be patient. Change in America is a slow river of molasses that at times is frozen.

O'Reilley is nothing more than a commentator who casually treats the LGBT community as second class citizens. As usual, those of us who are nurtured by 'crumbs' will applaud one statement. Should we now put him on the cover of the Advocate? Should we now invite him as a guest speaker for HRC? Sadly, that's our typical reaction to this type of event.

@ Ags Win: So, if those who don't serve don't have "a reason to protest DADT," and those who do serve who do protest DADT are breaking the law if doing so in uniform, how is anyone who tries to publicly challenge that law going to carry any weight or garner public support? It simply can't be that much of a no-win situation. ..and I'm glad to say that it apparently no longer is. If my government is going to discriminate against me, you're all damn well going to know about it. And before you say that there are rules in place barring such behavior, there are these two little things we call the U.S. Constitution and the Declaration of Independence that say that we're all equal, yet those rules don't seem to apply to GLBTs in this country with respect to the federal government. There are rules all over this country that are being broken every day; let's make sure we're challenging the right ones.

O'Reilly said something that supported equality and gay rights? Isn't this a sign of the apocalypse?

The "supermajority" Kyle claims exists apparently does so only in his imagination. Had Senators Kennedy and Byrd not died, maybe more could have been accomplished. In the current political climate, any bill brought to the Senate floor needs 60 votes. Fillibustering is the rule now....not the exception. The Democrats had 60 votes for a few weeks at most. What about everything they "did" accomplish? This Congress has been voted the most productive in US History, but because they havent acted on an issue you are passionate about, they suck? Though I admit Bill O'Reilly does seem moderate compared to Glen Beck, he's still a Conservative glory hound. O'Reilly knows the repeal of DADT is inevitable....but his statement that President Obama could just end it all with an executive order....was designed to undermine confidence in the President. The fact remains that the Republican Party does not support gay rights and its candidates run and are frequently elected on that very issue.

    Comment:

Add one Democratic president + a Democratic supermajority in Congress + a Democratic supermajority in the Senate and it = plenty of lip service for 2 years but NO ACTION. Even Bill O'Reilly knows its nonsense not to allow gay men and women to serve openly in the US military......but "Change u can believe in Obama" needs to "study" the issue. Hey libs, how's that Vote Democrat no matter how they treat you strategy working out for you?
