Sara Gilbert Officially Comes Out

SARA GILBERT X390 | ADVOCATE.COM

Sara Gilbert is executive-producing and starring in a new talk show focusing on the lives of mothers on which she will openly discuss her home life — including her partner and their kids.

Previously, Gilbert had shied away from publicly discussing her sexuality, though it was something of an open secret in Hollywood. Now, with The Talk set to focus on the real-life experiences of mothers, she said she feels it’s appropriate to officially come out.

CBS caused a bit of controversy with the show’s official press release, which had no mention of Gilbert’s partner. However, the actress defended the network at this week’s Television Critics Association luncheon, saying the omission was her call.

“I’m going to be discussing my life more, and I felt that the first place I wanted to do it wasn’t in a CBS press release. It just seemed impersonal, and I felt like I’d rather come in person and talk to you about all that stuff here,” she said.

OK Mary D., we hear you. You are gay. Big deal. Nobody other than your friends and family know your sexuality or even care to know. However, gay celebrities, politicians, and other people who live in the media spotlight and choose not to share their gay life publicly are hounded 24/7 by the media trying to out them. If they choose to bring their family into their public world, they have to out themselves, and that can be a tramatic decision and process. Your ignorant statement, "For all you simpletons, I don't need to go up to every man, woman, and child in the shopping mall and inform them I am a lesbian...Get a life people!!!!" is simply mean. Add your comment about Ms. Gilbert's looks, and I wonder if you are indeed a gay person. You sound like a closeted lesbian who hates herself, has no pride in her lifestyle, no pride in her loves or her family. YOU desperately need to get a life, girlfriend. Hopefully, it is a life about which you can be proud. Good luck with that!

What person argues against coming out? A person against gay rights. I have a a right to announce my sexual orientation in the mall if I damn well please. If Mary D wants to spend her time antagonizing gays and lesbians on a gay web site, clearly it is she who needs a life.

Yea! I think I was always a year or two younger than her portrayal of Darlene back in the day, and I always had such a crush on that character. I've always known she was gay, even when I kept myself in the dark about myself, and it's great for her to choose to come out.

What's great about this situation is that Ms. Gilbert had control over the media and chose to speak out personally on her own terms. My girlfriend and I have raised two children together and live, yes willingly, in the deep south where differences seem to matter more than one cares to admit, but our neighbors know us. Not unlike Ms. Gilbert, we don't make a big fuss about our lives, we are just who we are. If the situation lends itself to talk about who we are, we do, but generally we are just doing the everyday stuff just like everybody else. So, I commend Sara Gilbert for speaking honestly about her personal life and on her new show!

Again, Mary D., you just don't get it. None of us said we go to "every man, woman, or child in the shopping mall" to inform them of our sexual orientation. Of course they don't care about us; we (and you) aren't public figures. Ms. Gilbert is. Even if you don't care or want to know, there are people who do. Even though it was already pretty much well known that she is a lesbian, she did not choose to make a formal announcement until she was in a situation, her new talk show on the lives of mothers, where she will be discussing her home life at times. And so far, your arguments have not substantiated your hateful comment about her physical appearance, which was a cheap shot at best (btw, I feel she is attractive). Physical appearance has nothing to do with personality (she certainly has a more attractive personality than you do). Now, build a bridge and get over it.

OK... Let me make it more simple. My family and friends know who I am and love me for what I am. For all you simpletons, I don't need to go up to every man, woman, and child in the shopping mall and inform them I am a lesbian. If you feel you need to do that more power to you..Get a life people!!!!

Mary D., your analogy between you and Ms. Gilbert fails because Ms. Gilbert is a well known celebrity and you are not. If you haven't read Liyah's comments, please do. With an open mind, if that is possible for you. Your comments seem to be based on the attitude that seems to be pervasive hers that only "attractive" people (keep in mind that evaluation is both subjective and is often prejudiced by one's perception of the target's personality). Your comments also suggests jealousy of Ms. Gilbert's celebrity status.

To all you haters out there. You miss my point. To me she is not physically attractive. That is my right to say. You people would not be with your signifigant other if you were not attracted to them so enough said about that. And yes I do have pictures of my signifigant other on my desk and in my home but I do not have to run around and tell people I am a lesbian. Why do I need to do that? What happens in my bedroom stays in my bedroom.
