GOP Urged to Avoid Social Issues

TEA PARTY PROTEST X390 (GETTY) | ADVOCATE.COM

Gay conservative group GOProud joined forces with some Tea Party leaders to urge Sen. Mitch McConnell and Rep. John Boehner to avoid social issues such as same-sex marriage and keep their congressional members focused on economic freedom and individual liberty.

According to a news release, GOProud and Tea Party leaders from at least 10 states sent an open letter to McConnell and Boehner on Monday morning. Part of the letter, which includes 17 signatories, reads:

“This election was not a mandate for the Republican Party, nor was it a mandate to act on any social issue, nor should it be interpreted as a political blank check.

“Already, there are Washington insiders and special interest groups that hope to co-opt the Tea Party’s message and use it to push their own agenda – particularly as it relates to social issues. We are disappointed but not surprised by this development. We recognize the importance of values but believe strongly that those values should be taught by families and our houses of worship and not legislated from Washington, D.C.

“We urge you to stay focused on the issues that got you and your colleagues elected and to resist the urge to run down any social issue rabbit holes in order to appease the special interests.”

According to Politico, signatories like Ralph King, a Tea Party Patriots national leadership council member and Ohio co-coordinator, may be more motivated by limited government than they are pro-gay.

"When they were out in the Boston Harbor, they weren't arguing about who was gay or who was having an abortion," said King, reported Politico.

"Am I going to be the best man at a same sex-marriage wedding? That's not something I necessarily believe in," he said. "I look at myself as pretty socially conservative. But that's not what we push through the Tea Party Patriots."

@Greg - I really don't read it much but I don't doubt that someone like Pepa would foam at the mouth. I cringe everytime some right-wing wacko starts on their cussing tirades against Democrats and Obama just as much as when the gay left go on their foul language tirades against Republicans and Bush. When someone uses that language, it's obvious they're not up for a reasonable discussion. That's why I try to look at the idea itself, not who is saying it. It would be impossible to have any views since there's always going to be some inarticulate idiot that shares that view but has to go the F-word route against those she or he disagrees with.

"If most of these brain-dead Tea Partiers would have spent about 5 minutes reading up on the REAL reasons for the Boston Tea Party," Actually, if you spent a little MORE than 5 minutes reading, you'd know that the revenue was going to the East India Company. You know, sorta like how our tax money is used to fund the unions. And what sort of representation did we get when the majority of Americans vocally opposed such abuses as the Porkulus and ObamaCareless? Just as King George III dispatched troops to re-impose rule, so did King Barack dispatch SEIU thugs to harass voters, assault senior citizens and black conservatives, and terrorize children. Not to mention sending out his Kool-Aid drinkers to scream "RACIST!" at the thought criminals.

The Tea Party was essentially a grassroots response to out-of-control government spending by both Bush and Obama. Its leaders feel that this should continue to be the party's primary raison d'etre. I'm not a teapartier, but I can certainly relate to where they're coming from. Once this latest bubble that the Fed created bursts, anyone with significant credit debt and no savings is in for a world of hurt.

Wow, "17 signatories"! That'll get their attention. LMAO And as I previously posted regarding another GOProud article on this site... Do we REALLY KNOW that the GOProuders are gay? Couldn't this be a political scam perpetrated by a group of republicans who are trying to sway fiscally conservative gays into thinking that it is okay to vote republican thus taking votes away from the Dems? Are republicans simply grasping the opportunity because of our anger and disappointment with Obama and other Dems?

Yeah right! That'll happen! Tea Partiers or no Tea Partiers, the GOP still relies heavily on the religious conservative vote and thus will NOT stay away from "moral issues". Keep in mind that the darling of the Tea Party, Sarah Palin, is also a vocal Creationist, anti-abortion and anti-gay rights. She finds plenty of time to promote a "smaller" government that also has more power to enforce religious laws on citizens.

@Chris: I might agree with you, except that pretty soon the usual cheerleader here for "limited government," PEPA, will pop up here with his "childish and immature behavior," cursing, screaming and foaming at the mouth! So your pious lecture is hilarious. (Maybe you don't read this site much?) You do seem much more sensible than Pepa so it would be great if you were the libertarian p.o.v. here.

I cannot agree more that we need people on both sides of the aisle supporting our causes. True the republicans trail the democrats big time in supporting us (hell what did the democrats do for us anyway the last two years?) but if their is a chance we can work with them and get some of the moderates in the GOP on our side why not. In the long run not much will happen to further our causes without some GOP support.

Reading over the previous comments, it's disappointing to see the complete lack of tolerance and discussion from the gay left. Again, rather than debate the issue, the posters resort to name calling and cursing. Do you think you're going to win over anybody with that kind childish and immature behavior? I don't know why you continue to harp on Republicans for their anti-gay social policy yet give Democrats a pass just because they give you lip service. Plenty of Democrats hate gays too. There are legitimate concerns about this nations fiscal policy and big government intrusion. Try discussing the ideas, rather than dismissing them outright because someone has a D or R next to their name and threatening boycotts. Plenty of us in the gay community agree with fiscal responsibility and limited government. We don't have to feel like a victim all the time and we don't require the government's blessing of our relationships for our self esteem.

Yo, GOProud, go stick it!!!! We need to know where these repressive regressives stand on social issues. Why do you want them to ignore the subject, when they can do great harm to us once in office. Anything to get a Republican elected huh? Shame on you GOProud!
