Injustice at Every Turn

National Gay and Lesbian Task Force executive director Rea Carey says a tragic death 16 years ago continues to fuel her fight to ensure the "T" in LGBT is silent no more.

When I was a young person living in Washington, D.C., in 1995, a well-known local hairstylist was driving home one night and her car hit a tree. Paramedics rushed to the scene and cut off her clothes in an attempt to provide lifesaving medical care.

When they saw that Tyra Hunter was transgender, the medic swore at Ms. Hunter and stopped all medical treatment.

Stopped all medical treatment.

Tyra Hunter died later that night, and today, the discrimination and abuse that caused Tyra Hunter’s entirely preventable death are still firmly in place. I could not help but think of Tyra when I read the following comments that are part of the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force and National Center for Transgender Equality’s just-released report, "Injustice at Every Turn."

“The fear of being the victim of a hate crime has also meant that I haven't lived completely freely; I know that if people on the street knew that I was born female, I'd be at risk of violence or harassment.”

“People are suffering in my school. There are so many trans kids that just can't come out because they are afraid.”

“I have been harassed and physically assaulted on the street. One time, I didn't go to the hospital until I went home, changed [out of feminine] clothes, and then went to the emergency room in male mode. I had a broken collarbone as a result of that attack.”

These are the words of transgender and gender-nonconforming Americans, and sadly, their experiences are not uncommon. The hunger to be visible, to share experiences of harm and resiliency is notable, as this became the largest ever study of its kind. A total of 6,500 transgender and gender-nonconforming people from all 50 states and several territories shared with us their experiences of discrimination.

The data we collected was shocking. I know firsthand, from my friends and my work at the Task Force, that discrimination remains a tragic fact of life for far too many in our community. I know that if we do not act in stereotypical “male” or “female” ways, many take this nonconformity as an open invitation to harass or act violently toward us.

The oppressed become the oppressors. How -- typical. I'm sorry your sister is a fear-driven bigot. Congratulations on finding love.

I am an open and proud lesbian, who recently became the very proud girlfriend of an amazing woman, who just happened to be born male. My Vicky is one of the bravest people I have ever met in my life. She is a sweet, gentle, loving person who makes me feel like I am a princess. My parents have met her, and they think she is wonderful. My sister, however, who is an open and proud lesbian as well, refuses to meet her. She calls her derrogatory terms, and has told me she would not even want "it" at her funeral. People need to wake up and realize that Transgendered people live an amazingly hard life. They have people on all sides trying to knock them down. How many other societal groups have people attacking them from every single direction? Thank you so much for writing this article, as well as for conducting the study in the first place. It's a sad story that desperately needs to be told.

Wisconsin has had employment protections for Gays for 35 years. Trans people are still waiting for those same protections. Maryland is set to become the third state to recognise same-sex marriage - but where employment discrimination against Trans people who are not Gay is quite legal.

From my perspective, the attendants committed cold-blooded murder.

Rebecca - I'm pretty sure the silence about Ms Hunter from the DC orgs (including the NGLTF) was more about trying to distance themselves from anything remotely trans while using us to get job protections and hate crime legislation. Although I seem to remember Tyra being counted as a "gay man" and used as an example of anti-gay discrimination (could be remembering the wrong case, but I don't think so) to push a job and public accommodations law that didn't cover trans people. Remember, the '90's were the era of transsexuals = failed gay men and lesbians or Butches and drag queens going "too far".

Not only was no medic held to account for the murder (yes, it was) of Tyra Hunter, but the medic who let her bleed to death in the street was later promoted to a supervisory position. Most disgusting of all is that we didn't hear a peep from the DC orgs when that happened. Apparently, they were all too busy with other issues (read: same-sex marriage) to be bothered. And these people still wonder why we don't trust them anymore.

I completely agree with the results of this study: having your family support and try to understand you makes all the difference. I'm glad i gave my children an education in accepting and respecting others, no matter how different they were. My life took a turn nobody expected, including me, and they didn't judge. Tyra's memory will stay with me. I believe the "T" stands for HumaniT"
