Sanchez To Introduce Social Security Bill

Rep. Linda Sanchez will announce the introduction of a bill that would level the playing field for same-sex couples who lose major benefits under the Social Security system.

Rep. Linda Sanchez of California is expected to announce Sunday that she will be introducing legislation to equalize social security benefits for same-sex couples.

“I believe that this is a civil rights issue,” she told The Advocate, “and I’m committed to trying to extend equality and equal opportunity and I think this bill is one excellent way to do it.”

Sanchez will deliver the news Sunday at the L.A. Gay and Lesbian Center Rock for Equality rally. She says the center approached her about the issue along with the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force and AIDS Community Action Foundation.

Sanchez said she was especially sympathetic to the plight of same-sex couples given the country’s bleak economic downturn.

“For heterosexual couples there are survivor benefits if something should happen to a spouse and death benefits. In a time like this, that can make a big difference for someone living on a fixed income,” she said. “Contrast that with same-sex married couples who do the same thing that heterosexual couples do, which is pay into the social security system, and if something should happen to one of the two, the other is completely ineligible for social security benefits.”

Same-sex couples are denied four types of social security benefits: Spousal Retirement Benefits when one spouse retires; Spousal/Dependents Disability Benefit under Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) when one spouse is disabled; Survivors Benefits, which allow a widow or widower to be eligible to claim their own Social Security benefit or an amount equal to the benefit to which their deceased spouse was eligible; and Death Benefit, which provides a modest benefit for burial expenses. The Williams Institute estimates that the inequity costs LGBT people $124 million every year.

I know I have the correct Sanchez. It's Linda. Maybe she should change her view as far as the right of Latinos, Hispanics or Mexicans are concerned. They are the ones she supports and is trying to help and they call her names. The whole situation is out of hand. I know it will come to a quick focus soon. It may take another Mexican/American war but it will have to be dealt with sooner or later. I am Hispanic and I don't like the actions of most of the people coming here. Illegal or legal. We should close the borders, all of them, to all coming here. Face it, it would stop the drug and guns problem. Not to mention illegals who are screwing us out of anything they can. Don't be misled by these so-called good and understanding people, they have an agenda. We have to start playing hardball with this situation. You have a president that has no credentials. No management or capability at anything but community organizing. You've already seen how smart those people are. Look at Acorn

Gunshow you got your Sanchez's confused. Linda is the younger sister of Loretta who sits on the armed services committee currently and is in favor of eradicating DADT. It is Loretta that defeated B-1 Bob Dornan of "Shut Up Fag" fame here in Orange County California. My partner at the time and now my legal husband (one of 18,000 still legal, valid same sex marriages here in CA.) campaigned tirelessly and contributed generously to oust that rabid HOMOPHOBE. It was a pleasure to walk and work with Linda Sanchez during the 96' Loretta Sanchez vs Bob Dornan campaingn. Whats even better is seeing the only sister act in ongressional history taking a stand against the Homophobic policies of the United States! Go Girls !

Anyone who is willing to do anything positive for the LGBTQ community should be celebrated. We need as many allies as we can get. I hope this passes but I know it won't be easy.

Absolutely we should keep fighting to overturn DOMA...AND we should keep fighting for the rights we don't have because of DOMA, such as Social Security Benefits. One does not preclude the other.

If Sanchez does this then she should be recalled and illegals should be deported since Mexico City voted for abortion and gay marriage. We can bring out her old foe and investigate all the illegal votes she got to oust him. Personally I beleive we should make the illegals pay for their illegal entry and give preference to citizens but she is pushing the edge then the right should push the edge with deportation. Please endorse Steve Poisner for guv to deport illegals. You can thank Sanchez! You can tell the Israeli secret service with their bumbling assination attempts to just have jewish Congressman Schiff do his job on the H1bs. Who gives a #$%# who runs the government or the world government but by god you are going to do it right.

    Comment:

Elimination of DOMA would do nothing to expand Social Security benefits to gay couples in states that have constitutional amendments prohibiting same sex marriage or civil partnerships. Therefore, this bill is actually MORE expansive than a mere repeal of DOMA. The only way to overturn the state amendments would be by a US Supreme Court ruling finding the state constitutional amendments unconstitutional, or a federal constitutional amendment doing the same. DOMA is very limited in scope, as it applies only to the federal government.

Victor, the fact that you are not monogamous is actually quite irrelevant to the discussion of LEGAL marriage equality. How a couple sets the personal ground rules for their relationship is up to them, one is not required to be monogamous to be or stay married.
