Troye Sivan: Let's Talk About Sex

Troye Sivan wants to teach millennials about HIV, AIDS, and safe sex.

Millennials never witnessed the tragedy that was the AIDS crisis of the 1980s. They didn't have to watch their friends die around them, or experience the fear misinformation.

Some say this removal from the terrible realities of HIV and AIDS has led to a complacency and apathy that is not only disrespectful of a previous generation's struggles and triumphs, but downright deadly.

The lack of education around HIV and AIDS is staggering, especially in LGBTQ youth communities. So kudos to actor turned YouTuber turned recording artist Troye Sivan for posting a recent video that lays down the facts for his audience.

Known for playing young Wolverine in 2009's X-Men Origins: Wolverine, the 19-year-old Australian actor-singer came out as gay on YouTube a year ago.

Since then he's posted regularly on all sorts of topics, most recently, sex. And more specifically, safe sex.

"I just realized that I'm a 19-year-old man in Australia who's had a brilliant education, and I'm gay -- and I don't even know what AIDS looks like, I don't know, really, what it's about," Sivan said after watching HBO's recent television movie The Normal Heart.

Sivan went on to list 10 facts everyone should know about HIV and AIDS, and discussed the importance of condoms, getting tested, and antiretroviral drugs.

While it may seem simple, basic even, it's heartening to see young influencers like Sivan shed light on this very important issue.

"I think it's a very, very serious [conversation] that needs to be had," he said.

We couldn't agree more.
