Gay Russiareports that Bulat Barantaev, a known gay rights advocate, was badly beaten in the center of Novosibirsk following a trip to the mayor's office, where he filed a notice of his intent to hold a public demonstration.
Authorities say masked men attacked Barantaev, stripped him down, assaulted him with eggs, and then escaped, despite the presence of police.
According to the story, Barantaev wrote a statement on Wednesday identifying one of his attackers from a photo on the internet.
