Mexican singer Paquita la del Barrio now says she's sorry for her comments against adoption by gays and that she'll perform at a gay disco on Tuesday to apologize some more, the Los Angeles Times's Daniel Hernandez reports. The singer stirred up controversy on both sides of the border last week when she told a reporter that she would rather see a child die in the streets than be adopted by a gay couple.
In the week since making that comment, Paquita has said that her remarks were a result of her "poor education" and that a majority of her friends are gay. "I don't have anything against anyone," she added.
Tuesday's performance will be held at a gay disco called Spartacus in the Mexico City suburb of Ciudad Nezahualocoyotl. The club is owned by a longtime friend of Paquita's.
As the Times's Hernandez points out, "As outrageous as her comments might have been for many fans, Paquita's disapproval of gay couples adopting children is not that far out of the mainstream in Mexico." A recent poll found that 71% of respondents were opposed a new law allowing same-sex marriages in Mexico City. Only 10% approved.
Watch a video of Paquita's initial remarks regarding adoption below.
