Earlier this month cable network Logo announced that it would be honoring The Advocate at its third annual Trailblazer Honors. As we celebrate our 50th year in print, former editor in chief Anne Stockwell reflected on the role of The Advocate decades before marriage equality. "For really young people, I think it was impossible to know how dangerous it was," said Stockwell, who ran the LGBT publication between 2006 and 2008. For the millions of LGBT people who did not live in accepting urban centers, she said, "The Advocate was a lifeline," one that helped to show America that "our community was worth joining."
