Artist Spotlight on Lorenzo Triburgo

Lorenzo Triburgo is a native New Yorker who currently resides in Portland, Ore. He holds a 2002 BA degree in photography and gender studies from the New York University Gallatin School of Individualized Studies and earned an MFA degree in photography and related media in 2005 from the School of Visual Arts in New York.

Triburgo has showcased several bodies of work, most recently his series "Transportraits," pictured in this portfolio. Triburgo examines identity and representation through the creation of landscape oil paintings as backdrops for photographic portraits of transgender men, captured on medium-format film. Triburgo confronts the overlapping ideas of American identity, what is truly "real," and photography's critical role in framing and constructing our understanding of notions of identity and reality.
