All-star group assembles to record "We Are Family" to raise money for WTC victims

"We Are Family" has long been an anthem at gay pride parades, but now the Nile Rodgers-penned hit will be getting an all-star rerecording to raise money for World Trade Center victims and their families. Fox411.com reports that musicians who have committed to Rodgers for Saturday's recording session include Diana Ross, Sister Sledge (who originally recorded the song), Dionne Warwick, Cyndi Lauper, Sugar Ray, Roberta Flack, Sheryl Crow, openly gay B-52's lead singer Fred Schneider, Eartha Kitt, Kevin Bacon, Patti Smyth, and Run DMC, with additional interest (although no firm commitment yet) from Elton John, Lenny Kravitz, Steven Tyler, Seal, Sophie B. Hawkins, Ice Cube, 'N Sync, Britney Spears, matchbox twenty, and Elizabeth Taylor. In an E-mail sent out by Rodgers--who lost his friend Berry Berenson in last week's plane crashes--to celebrities, he wrote, "I am feeling very afraid. I get nervous when the dominant emotion around me is free-floating fear--as it can get very ugly. I like to believe in hope. Nothing lifts the spirit like song. Politicians and tacticians have known this since the beginning of time. In my own humble way I am giving the greatest gift I have: the gift of music. The proceeds of the new recording will go to various charities to benefit those who need our help. I am asking all of you to be a part of this recording. Can we organize for peace half as efficiently as others do for hate?"
