The camp movie Xanadu will be remade as a musical and open at Broadway's Helen Hayes Theatre in May 2007, reports Variety.

Out playwright Douglas Carter Beane--currently enjoying Broadway success with his Hollywood satire The Little Dog Laughed--wrote the musical's book. If early reports are true, stage vet Jane Krakowski will portray Olivia Newton-John's Xanadu character, Kira, a Greek muse who helps a down-on-his-luck artist open a roller disco. Openly gay actor Cheyenne Jackson--who played Mark Bingham in this year's United 93--is a likely candidate for Sonny, the unlucky artist. It's also reported that Ben Vereen, who was part of an August 3 Xanadu reading, could take on Danny, Gene Kelly's character in the film.

Originally intended to open off-Broadway, Xanadu is being produced for the Great White Way by Rob Ahrens and Dan Vickery. (The Advocate)
