A musical version
of John Waters's film about high school life in
Baltimore circa 1954 will open April 24 on Broadway,
producers Adam Epstein, Allan S. Gordon, and Elan V.
McAllister, announced Sunday.
The show, which
has a score by David Javerbaum and Adam Schlesinger,
focuses on Wade ''Cry-Baby'' Walker, a bad boy who falls for
a good girl. James Snyder stars as the title
character, a role played in the 1990 movie by Johnny
Depp.
Javerbaum is the
executive producer and former head writer for The Daily
Show, and Schlesinger is a member of the band
Fountains of Wayne. The book for Cry-Baby was written
by Mark O'Donnell and Thomas Meehan, who also wrote
the book for Hairspray. The director is Mark
Brokaw.
Cry-Baby begins preview performances March 15
at the Marquis Theatre. For all previews tickets will be
priced at $54, in honor of the show's mid-'50s
setting.
The stage version
of Hairspray, another Waters movie, has been
running on Broadway since August 2002. (AP)
