Stephen Colbert Evaluates Rick Santorum's Cred as a Homophobe
For Stephen Colbert, the evangelical leaders who gathered this weekend and voted to back only one of the social conservatives in the GOP primary have made a mistake. They picked Rick Santorum. And he's not a big enough homophobe.
"I'm a way bigger homophobe than Rick Santorum," said Colbert, who recently announced his exploratory committee into a run for president. "Now sure, sure he's pretty good. He opposes gay sex. But he's still in favor of heterosexual sex." Colbert pointed out that "if you think about it, there's a dude in there," and "that's pretty gay."
Santorum himself has been making the case that he's not very antigay. His wife, Karen, told a woman at a forum in South Carolina, "Rick does not hate anyone. He loves them. What he has simply said is [gay] marriage shouldn't happen." Santorum himself has claimed to have gay friends. And his daughter Elizabeth said she earlier this month that not only does she have gay friends, they support her father for president.
Colbert's possible run for president is hamstrung by the fact it's impossible for him to get on the ballot. But that didn't stop the fake TV commentator from criticizing the evangelical choice for president.
Watch his argument below, with the Santorum joke at the very end.
